Computer addiction, computer-mediated lives, and solitary Internet habits of those who never let normal human living come between themselves and their computers have become hallmarks of our age.

While we continue to advance technology, we are also falling under the spell of the “rhetoric of the technological sublime” and unable to see the illusory capabilities of technology. The virtual world of cyberspace has many attractions. But it is also a dirge-like ode to the seclusion of people hardly aware of themselves, their family, and their society. Think of those who fall down dead of exhaustion while playing computer games for days together. Think of those absorbed endlessly into web surfing, email exchange, downloads, and other computing paraphernalia. Think of those who have given themselves up 24/7 to meet the professional challenges of technology and market. The elemental urges of an increasing number of IT zealots seem to be computation and competitive advantages rather than self preservation and sociability.

Is the insatiate human hunger for computing similar to the one that began in the Garden of Eden? A recent Stanford University study found that fourteen percent of computer users neglected work, family, food, and sleep in order to remain online. The American Medical Association wants to classify Internet obsession as a psychiatric disease. Chinese psychologists recognize Internet addiction as a condition similar to compulsive gambling or alcoholic dependence, and camps are held to treat Internet addicts. In South Korea counselors wean children away from spending long hours on the Internet. Meanwhile, the online world continues to expand unabated. Virtual reality mongers could not have been happier, if they still know what happiness is!

The hiding places computer leads to is the antithesis of what IT utopians glamorously call “the global village” and “the society of the spectacle,” predicted in the 1960s. The computer has redefined the traditional relationship between humans and humans, and humans and machines, while humans adjust their evolution to the machine. In the book iBrain: Surviving the Technological Alteration of the Modern Mind neuropsychiatrist Dr Gary Small and Gigi Vorgan say that digital technology is altering the human neural circuitry. “This evolutionary brain process has rapidly emerged over a single generation . . . . Although the science behind the way technology affects behavior and mental state is only in its infancy, initial observations indicate important links between extensive brain exposure to new technology and mental disorders.”

In Ape and Essence Huxley depicts mankind as concerned only with war and technology and so removed from reality that humans have become unintelligent animals spiraling toward World War III. Faust warns that certain kinds of power come at a price of what we hold most uniquely human. Are we paying too high a price for the power of technology? Perhaps. We need to steer the course of technology to create a human-centric community rather than passively experience the power of technology in a technology-centric community.

And if we don’t do so? We shall end up caught in situations I have tried to capture in my Science Fiction novel SILICON SELF, recently published by eTreasures Publishing.

Anderson is passionately developing software to speedily reach the leading edge of IT. His wife Nora wonders how dangerously close to the edge can he go, and whether the folly of ignorance is less dangerous than that of too advanced technologies? She tries to wean him away, determined to save her family and the world from at least one technology leader.

In the blinding rush to be ahead in technology, Anderson and his peers build up an expensive IT solution, but only to find there is no problem needing it. To discover or invent a problem for a ready solution is known as “solving the solution.” While striving to solve the solution, their ISP breaks down and they lose Internet connectivity. They struggle to find their worlds outside the Internet. Cut off from virtual reality, they cannot cope up with any reality, and are constantly in conflict with themselves, their colleagues, and their environment. Their encounters create comical situations.

I believe the story of SILICON SELF touches the lives of all of us in a way that is at once comic and tragic. How much comical can our computing environment be? And how much tragic can our computing environment be? Where is our obsession with computers leading us?

I live with eight cats. My two kittens are quite adventerous. My Christmas tree is situatated between double windows in my living room. I walked into the room one morning and found, to my suprise, the kittens clinging to the center of the tree. They turned to me with a calm stare, but didn't drop from the tree. Misty and Tia clung to the tree for some time. They had a lot of fun moving from branch to branch. At times all I could see was their white underbellies. I couldn't fathom how they didn't turn it over. When they finally got down, they started to systimatically knock off all the ornaments. I got a box and I'm putting all the dislodged ornaments in it. I want to see how many I have left on the tree by Chistmas.

Tis the Season to Be …

Jolly?

When I was a child, Christmas was this wonderful holiday when this mysterious man entered our home through the chimney and left a room full of toys behind. We were taught to expect everything we wanted on this day, and we were never disappointed. Needless to say, on this day we became the picture of ‘three spoiled children.’ We were pretty good the rest of the year, but watch out Santa.

And then the disappointments started.

First, we figured out there was no such thing as this magical man. The presents kept coming, so no big deal.
Then, our family slipped below middle class, and Christmas presents were few. I remember, two children, one was me, crying their little eyes out. My brother was old enough to understand what was going on. What had we done? Were we bad?

The final blow was the year without my father, Santa, or presents. From that day on, Christmas became just another day. There was nothing on that day, or any other holiday for that matter.

My point here is Christmas is not about this jolly old man wearing a red outfit, although he is a fun man to introduce your children to. And, it’s not about having a room full of gifts, although that’s fun too.
To me, Christmas is more about appreciating those in your life and letting them know how much they mean to you. It’s about celebrating life and making the most of what we have. It’s about coming together, family, friends, and even strangers to celebrate the creation of human kind and giving forgiveness to others.

Who doesn’t like to be scared at Christmas, and I don’t justmean by your neighbor’s crazy, seizure-inducing light display? I can hear yousaying that this is a ridiculous question, but is it? Seriously, stop sayingit’s silly and go with me for a few minutes.

Think about the myth of Santa Claus. Santa is a large,robust man who dresses in bright red and has never owned a razor in his life.He lives inside the Arctic Circle . . . bychoice. Who lives with him? A few hundred elves that spend 364 days a yearproducing merchandise for the fat man to give away. “Ok,” you’re saying now,“this is strange, but not scary.”

What does Santa do with all his high-end electronics, toysand socks the elves make? He delivers them to every person in the world, all inabout 12 hours, or the time it takes to watch the Lord of the Rings trilogy.“Fine,” you’re mumbling now, “that part of the story is a little hard tobelieve but it’s still not scary.”

eTreasures Twelve Days Blog #1: My Favorite Thing About Christmas

I'm not a big holiday fan. I succumb to the stress and overspending just like everyone else, which leaves me feeling guilty and unfulfilled. At one point, I wanted to give up celebrating Christmas all together. I was a Grinch in every sense of the word.

Then, I became a parent. When my sons were little, I still attempted to avoid the holidays, but as they got older and more fascinated with Christmas, I changed my outlook.Watching holidays through the eyes of children rekindles the joy of the season. They remind me about the good things, the fun things, that the season brings. For my kids, it's not only about the presents, even though that is a HUGE part, it's also about helping others and celebrating the season for what it really entails.

I still spend way too much money and get stressed out, but I also take the time to sit back and watch my kids. I'm excited to see their reaction on Christmas Eve when they open their presents, then on Christmas Day after Santa shows up. They truly surprise me with their wonder and fascination, and make the whole season worthwhile!

You are fifteen, alone, no one to care for you and now you find your way to a camp set up by total strangers. Given a small living space, a job, told that you are still required to go to school but cannot figure out why you spend the next two years living in these confined quarters going to school, doing menial housework as payment for your room and board and hoping to find your way out of this place. When someone comes and finds you in this camp, claims to be your cousin, why would you go to an unchartered place that is filled with Zombies or danger when you could live out your life in Florida and be safe? Krista meet Liet who is her only family, the General of the army and who takes her with him to North Platte to learn how to kill Zombies, use weapons and become part of the military life there. But, what she learns it is that North Platte is not that great, the comforts are few, the food is good and her job is still to wait on others, clean the rooms and in return one young girl named Pam would teach her how to kill Zombies and use weapons. As Krista becomes a part of this community she learns more about the people there, her cousin Liet and what is expected of her in the long run. Did she make the right decision in coming with him? That still remains to be seen. As her dreams are flooded with her past, what caused her parent’s deaths and her anger at their stupidity making the situation even more difficult for her to handle at times?

Life can play tricks on you are any moment. Sometimes you think your world is just perfect and in one minute everything falls apart. Think about natural disasters, earthquakes, tsunamis and nuclear explosions but what about a phenomenon so extraordinary that it defies believable? What about a group of seventh graders going around eating, maiming and killing everyone? What if they are really dead?

Things turn around for Krista as she decides to volunteer to go out to the West and get supplies needed for their compound. Those that cross Liet better watch out. Trying to protect Krista he wants to control her movements, but she becomes her own person and quite independent. As they go out for supplies and find their way into a mall they meet humans, zombies and other dangers. Who can she trust and whom can they trust? Quinn, Kyle and two others go along with her to fight the zombies, find supplies and hopefully not get bitten. When she returns from one outing she withstands the indignities of what happens when you have to be screened. What caused the zombies to take over the world, how is the world going to cope with this? What will the end result be for those in Florida, the West and of course in the East?

The survivors have to learn many of life’s lessons that we hope we never have to face today. After living in a world with freedoms, able to make your own choices and not having to fear where you go and hope to get there, imagine living in a totalitarian world under military rule and having to worry as a worker or citizen being shot if you make one false move, use supplies for personal gain or get out of line. Some live in fear while those in Florida almost in oblivion yet still confined to their compounds, hotels and living areas but not being able to really venture out because of the threat of zombies. So, whose world is better?

Trust, loyalties, deceits, betrayals and much more come to light as Krista finds her way in world without her parents and one man who calls himself her cousin and claims to care. But, Krista learns the hard facts from Quinn and the others who she sets out with to get supplies. Liet, is anything but whom she thinks he is and his ultimate goal is to keep everyone under his control. Those living in Florida will never leave for fear of encountering Zombies and those in North Platte are under his control and being brainwashed to do his bidding and more. Those that defy him will not see the sun come up again. So, what caused this to happen and how will it ever be stopped? Why won’t they send better workers to help build a wall? Who is really in control?

Krista makes a trip back to Florida and decisions are made that would change her life. Getting closer to Quinn upsets Liet but this clever girl knows how to manipulate things to turn in her direction. The Families in Florida creating their own web of deceit and mind control over the people in Florida. Liet using his force and fear to keep everyone in North Platte under his power and control. Zombies taking over and others being killed and one young girl with a plan to do more than survive. What happens at the end you will have to read and find out for yourself? Will the workers and guards rebel against Liet? Will Krista and Quinn’s plan work or will more people die?

Author Pembroke Sinclair brings to light many issues that we hope never to have to face today. The Zombies represent a terrorist attack on the world and they seem to be everywhere and there is no end to their death and destructive ways. The Families, Liet and others feel that the only way to create safe havens so they say is to control the masses as many dictators in so many countries do today. Brainwashing people, instilling fear and hoping that no one will rebel or begin to think about what is happening. The ending will definitely make you pause for thought. What happens in North Platte and to Liet wait and see? What will happen to Florida and the rest of the world when they find out the end result in North Platte? Characters that are really well developed and a fast paced plot that kept this reviewer glued to the printed page since I read the book in two hours and could not put it down. Quinn, Krista, Liet, Pam, Kyle and Brian what is next for them and what will the end result be? Who can be trusted? Where will the Zombies strike next? For that we will all have to wait for our talented and creative author to write her next book.

Enjoyable backdrop in a Caribbean resort combined with a wide mix of unique characters and histories leads the reader into many twists in the mystery plot. Readers may find a change in their sympathies with various characters as the action unfolds, and the character respond with emotions from calm to hysterical. Seems like a great start for the writer with her first published fiction book.

This book was thrilling to read! I think I burned my kindle up! The twists and turns kept me guessing and I still came up with the wrong person until the end! I love how there are still many unleft questions that I am sure I will get answers to in the next book with this series. Cindy brought each character to life but left you guessing as to what each is hiding and where their loyalty lies! I also love how straight forward the writing was and how it wasn't a sappy, happy ever after love story!! Thank you Cindy!!

eTP: What drew you to writing?

JB: I think more than anything, my love of reading. At an early age, I dreamed of putting my thoughts down on paper. I believe all writers have an inborn desire to expess their ideas. I want to share my stories, but more important to me, is for people to enjoy reading my work.

eTP: Why Historicals? And what other genres do you write?

JB: I love Hitoricals! All through school, my favorite subject was history, especially the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. My love of royalty, and the age of chivalry, made my choice of genres easy. I write Fiction, Gothic, Historical Romance, and Medieval Period works.

eTP: If you could pick one genre you've never written but would love to what would it be and why?

JB: Thats easy, Sci-Fi. I may one day give this a try. I have a lot of ideas about this. A space ship, with aliens, or possibly, a time traveler. This would take me into a new, exciting era. The future is as intriging as the past.

eTP: How long have you been writing?

JB: Full time, three years now. I did dabble a few years ago, but when my first submission was declined, I decided maybe writing wasn't for me after all. One morning three years ago, I woke up and made a decision to live my dream. I had a story in my head I desperately wanted to put on paper. I haven't looked back.

eTP: If someone who is just looking to get published were to approach you what would you tell them is the most important thing for them to do?

JB: I would tell them to do some research. There are many sites out there with wonderful information on how to write, where to go to find a publisher, what the market is like, and what to look for in a contract. Getting advice from other authors is also imperative. Some of the best advice I received was to look into the world of ebooks. It is a fast growing market.

Whew -my goodness! I didn't realize how involved getting to the winners would be. I have 34 double sided pages of entries I am going through to verify no duplicates, verifying points and adding extra points. Is it Romance or Fiction with a Romantic Element?

OVERVIEW

During the next three days, we hope to clarify the differences between writing Romance and writing Fiction with a romantic element.

*The growth of the protaganist is based not on a Happily Ever After with their partner - but rather defeating the obsticles and conflicts that are thrown in his/her way throughout the story. IE: Lord of the Rings - the romance between Aragorn and Arwin is secondary - it enhances the story but doesn't control it.

Track Your Success

The conventional wisdom says writers should have hosted domains for their web sites, rather than freebees attached to services, such as Google. They say it's more "professional.' That's not half the benefit of a hosted domain. The big deal is the availability of sophisticated web statistics, which can track the number and type of visitors and the success of your advertising efforts.

Visitors

During the current month 599 unique (new) visitors accessed this web site. The total of all visits is 961, which means 362 people are return visitors to the site. That's the best news. Something is keeping them coming back, perhaps an ongoing contest.

Pages

The pages category shows you how many "hits" per page, and which are your most popular pages. The listing showing only a backslash "/" is the site's home page. It was visited 679 times, was the entry point to the site 536 times, and was the exit point 441 times. According to the total of the Viewed column, there was a lot of navigation to the other pages between entry and exit.

The total of the Entry column is 961, which is also the total number of visits to the site. Same for the Exit column.

Let's analyze the books.htm page. It shows 162 entry points and 194 exit points. This is good news. It means 162 visitors specifically came to the site to view the site owner's books. They came either through direct entry of the URL into their browsers, clicking an external link, or because the site is in their favorites list. In addition, 32 visitors entered the site via a different page and took the time to visit the books page before exiting.

The viewed column registers 2008 visits to all the pages. There were 961 total visits to the site so each visitor viewed an average of 2.1 pages. The stats category shows the number of times the system updated the statistics log.

Browsers

The stats here alert you to the types of browsers used by visitors to your web site. The practical purpose is to install the top three or four browsers on your computer, then test and adjust your web pages to display properly on each of the browsers. In this way you can ensure the visitors to your site have a satisfying experience and don't, for example, see text on top of text.

Links

The Links category is where you track the success of advertising campaigns and see where many of your visitors are coming from. It does not count entries to your web site via search engines.

Summary

These are only a few of the benefits of having a hosted domain with sophisticated web statistics. Before deciding on a domain hosting service, ask to see an example of the web stats provided free by the service. Some services charge separately for the type of stats shown in the example. Luckily, mine doesn't.

Three different books, three different writers and yet everyone of them set their hook in me in the first sentence. I had to continue reading to find out what happened next. As a writer that’s your job, what your publisher expects from you: to set your hook and play that reader until they finish the book.

So how do you do it? Every author has a theory or method to do it. One of the best quotes I’ve heard – and unfortunately, I don’t know who to thank for it. “Enter the scene later than you think you should and leave before you think you should.”

Too many new authors spend the first chapter or two giving the backstory. I think of it as the story is a tree. The trunk (main plot), limbs and leaves (Character’s and subplot) are what the reader sees. But as the author you see the roots. Where the character was before page one. What shaped their lives and led them to the point they are in that first sentence.

An opening chapter has ten components:
1. Inciting Incident
2. Story worthy problem
3. Initial surface problem
4. Setup
5. Backstory
6. A stellar opening sentence
7. Language
8. Character
9. Setting
10. Foreshadowing

The first three are primary considerations. If you don’t have a story worthy problem why should a reader invest the hours to read your book? Inciting incident, something has to get the ball moving. Initial surface problem maybe it’s the heroine needs the hero to come with her or fix her tire or the list is endless.

Wait, back-story is number 4 and I said back-story is bad or did I? Back-story in and of itself isn’t bad but it needs to be given in small bites. You don’t shove an entire hamburger into your mouth you take bites of it and that’s how you need to handle backstory. A smidge here, a dash there and by the end of the book your reader knows the characters. Les Edgerton says it best - “The single biggest fault of most writers is that they don’t trust the reader’s intelligence to “get” what’s going on without providing lengthy backstory.” Trust your readers! They will reward you with loyalty.

Each chapter has a hook too. Don’t put your character nicely in bed at the end of a chapter. Your reader will nod, yawn, close the book and go to sleep. Think of the last book you read that you couldn’t put down. Now go get it. Look at the end of the chapter. See the little cliffhanger? That’s what you need to do.

Writing What You Know - Building a Research Library

In my fiction 101 class in college, my teacher gave me the best and worst piece of advice ever. Write what you know, he said. At first, this discouraged me. How in the world could I write a good story if I only stuck to what I knew? But then, I thought more and realized, if I didn't know it, well I was going to do research until I did. As it turns out, research is a HUGE part of life as an author. You must become a jack of all trades yet the master of none. I mean after all, how do you expect to keep your audience enthralled if you don't make what you are writing real?

So you need to start building your research library. Of course, a lot of resources are available on the web but sometimes you just need a book to flip through, bookmark, dog ear, or mark with a post-it for future reference. The first thing you need is a good dictionary and thesaurus. For this, you can make do with web-based ones. I personally use www.dictionary.com and www.thesaurus.com. Next, you'll want a book for style and grammar. The one that most publishers use is The Chicago Manual of Style.

Now on to the juicy stuff. The first book in your library, in my honest opinon is Goals, Motivation, and Conflict. I know what you're thinking. I've tried all of those writing books and none of it works for me. Well, I was in that group myself until I read this book. It asks questions that help you flesh out your characters, to make certain they are real and have depth. The examples are very good and use movies and books that we are all familiar with.

As I was browsing amazon looking for links to some of the books, I came across the Elements of Fiction Writing Series. From what I could tell this series of books looks promising. I'll be getting a few of them to add to my arsenal.

Next up, is a more specific series : The Howdunit Series This series deals mostly with mystery and police work. It has several books on crime scene investigation and other related topics. If you're going to be writing a story dealing with police, then you should check these out.

What if you want to set your story in Colonial America? Or maybe Britian in the Middle Ages? Instead of slogging through your history books, check out The Writer's Guide to Everyday Life. It covers those periods and many more.

Romance too needs is share of research materials. On Writing Romance is just one of the many available. If you want to dip your toes in the BDSM field, I highly recommend The Loving Dominant and Screw the Roses, Send Me The Thorns.

In addition to the above mentioned, the For Dummies Series, the Complete Idiot's Series, and The Everything Guide series all have books for writing. A quick search at Amazon or Barnes & Noble will provide a plethora of material. As for web-based resources, Ive already mentioned the dictionary and thesaurus, but Goggle and Wikipedia can provide good sources too. Just remember to check the sources, especially with Wikipedia.

The final thing I'll mention is that along with all these research books, reading other books in your genre of choice will also help you along the way. Well, that's it from me for now. Good luck, happy researching and happy writing!

Deep POV - What is it?

The sun rose, pink and orange fingers caressing the purple and blue cloud banks as the countryside woke. Birds chirped. The leaves in the trees rustled a morning greeting. Janet sighed. This was her favorite time of day.

Or

Janet pulled her horse to a stop and sat astride its broad back staring at the horizon as the sun rose, pink and orange fingers caressing the purple and blue cloud banks. She inhaled deeply enjoying the scents of morning dew and fresh cut hay. The birds chirped and hopped about rustling the trees overhead as the countryside woke. Janet sighed deeply, she loved this time of day.

The first isn’t Deep POV the second is. Why? In the first one it could be anyone watching the sun rise. In the second the who is very clear. The character’s senses come into play. You are there with her – standing beside her as she sits on her horse, hearing the birds, smelling the dew and hay. That is Deep POV. I refer to it as crawling into the character’s skin. The most extreme Deep POV is first person – think Harry Potter by JK Rowling, or The Hollows series by Kim Harrison. Then there’s third person Deep POV, which is what most of the best sellers do.

When you write Deep POV the reader is in the story not watching the story they are experiencing it with the characters. When you watch a traditional movie shown on the screen you are aware that it is happening on the screen. How many of you have seen Avatar in 3D? I have – and swatted at the bugs. With the 3D glasses you are in the world of Pandora with Jake, if you didn’t see it in 3D you were watching. How many saw Titanic in the theater? Didn’t it seem as though the theater got colder as the ship sank? That’s what you are trying to achieve with Deep POV. That’s why Deep POV is so important. The reader of your book wants to be transported away from the kids, the husband, the pile of dishes waiting in the sink. It’s the job of the writer to do that and do it well.

As writer’s we hear it frequently – “Show don’t tell” – but what does that mean? If you are in Deep POV the question is answered. We are seeing, feeling, tasting, smelling, hearing and touching what the character does. In Shallow POV the reader is not walking with your characters but watching them, the reader is outside the characters world.

To quote Best Selling Author Angela Knight:
“Point of view is one of those concepts that gives newbies fits. One reason for this is that the effect of POV can be very subtle – so much so that most readers don’t notice it at all, so new writers don’t understand its importance.
…You’re in the character’s head, experiencing the scene as if you were that character. You think his thoughts, you feel the sensations he feels, you hear what he hears.”

My friend went the extra mile and also created some "hook" bookmarks for me!!

The two smaller and the medium with orange beads are silverplate; the large one on the upper right is antique silver. Aren't these wonderful! I keep trying to think of a special book for the big one!!

Last but not least she added these two wonderful eye glass chains made with semi-precious beads including turquoise, amethysts, opals and aventurine.

She even brought these to me today even though she has been under the weather with a terrible sinus infection! So I give a BIG Thank you to my friend, Jensmere!!

We are now announcing over the web that eTreasures Publishing is under new ownership/management. Martha Eskuchen is now at the helm of this treasure chest and has plenty planned. We have a great team of excited staff too - check them out at Meet the Staff at the new website!

The site is not fully functional yet - we do expect all author and book pages up by tomorrow but we were all too excited to wait another day for announcements!

We're looking forward with a great deal of excitement (did you get that feeling yet?!) and some really cool plans for the future.
