New Release: Loving, Living, and Legends by Jack Horne

EPT readers, it’s a new release! Jack Horne is back, exploring the complexities of life, love, and the supernatural in his new poetry collection, Loving, Living, and Legends. This collection comes as a follow-up to the collection Shades of Darkness and Light, also available through the ETP store.

This collection of poetry touches on a plethora of subjects, from humorous vignettes, to pieces delving into the grief of death. While the familiar themes of loneliness and loss can find resonance within all of us, Jack handles them with a sense of hope, rather than one of despair. Jack loves to write humor, and his hope with this work is that, though many of the poems deal with serious matters, readers will find laughter as well as empathy. After all, the failure of a relationship or death of a loved one are experiences fraught with grief, but also sometimes with humor that perhaps we would leave untouched if not for someone else saying “No, I’ve felt this way, too!”.

We hope that through the pages of this collection, you find a bit of yourself, and that Jack’s words tap into a bit of the human experience in all of us.

EXCERPT:
In a rush to get to the library, I phoned Raquel on the way. “There’s so much to tell you, love,” I said. “Fancy helping me research at the library?”
“The library? Hardly exciting, is it?” she snapped. “You do that on your own and you can tell me about it, if you like, over dinner in a decent restaurant.”
Suzy would have gladly helped, I thought as I put the phone down. Suzy would happily go anywhere with me.
The library was a grandiose Victorian building, a stone carving of Sir Francis Drake’s ship over its doorway. I admired the stained glass windows as I made my way up two flights of steps, and, panting slightly, smiled at the librarian. “Have you got any press cuttings about a hanging? I think it was in this month, about fifty years ago.”
“A public execution?” she asked, her gentle voice surprising from a woman of such size and with such a ferocious expression. “Or a suicide?”
I followed her to a huge wooden cabinet and watched as she selected a drawer. “What was the man’s name again?”
“Joseph Pearson,” I said, hardly daring to breathe as she thumbed through the index cards.
She nodded towards a card. “Here’s your man.”
“You have all the newspaper reports on microfiche?”
She nodded, removing the card and closing the drawer. “It says here where to find them. Lucky for you, they’re all on the same reel. I’ll get it for you.”
Thanking her, I suddenly had an idea. “Would it be possible to check a suicide that probably happened fifty years before that?”
“You’re not interested in this one now?” she asked, her mouth a scowl.
“Yes, but I think an actor, a Patrick O’Toole, was found hanged at the theatre about fifty years earlier.”

She studied me curiously. “Are you writing a book on suicides?” she asked, her smile transforming her face. She selected another drawer of the cabinet and flicked through the cards. “That’s strange,” she said with a slight frown. “It happened exactly fifty years to the day before the Pearson hanging.”

Cyber Vamps

By

Jack Horne

I have loved vampires and vampire stories ever since I was a child. An episode of Starsky & Hutch, where a twisted killer dressed in a cape and wore fangs, thrilled me when I was eight. Bram Stoker’s Dracula is one of my favorite books, and I decided to write a vampire novel after visiting Whitby, England and seeing where part of the great work is set. Anne Rice’s excellent Vampire Chronicles also fed my passion. I was almost convinced that Lestat was really out there.

Yes, I love those, but I wanted to write something completely different…

I heard about energy-stealing ‘psi’ vampires quite by chance. My mind instantly went into overdrive: what if blood-drinkers and energy-stealers met? Would they be enemies or allies? Could there even be a hybrid?

My former wife was a fan of internet chat (and met her current partner through a fantasy chat room). The idea of someone chatting online to vampires was when the book finally came together. How could anyone be certain that he or she was chatting with role players? What if real vampires came into a chat room?  Would the chat fan ever discover the truth? And what would happen if they met in reality?

This book really couldn’t have happened without my former wife, who also loves vampires. I have dedicated Cyber Vamps to Sue in recognition and thanks for her help and advice…and for convincing me that I could write!

Cyber Vamps

Alone and dying, Renee Svensson’s only distraction is her passion for vampires. Fueled by a lifelong fascination, she sets up an online chat room where she meets Aurelia, allegedly a blood drinker from ancient Rome, and Suze, a misfit psi vampire. But are they role players or bona fide vampires? How can Renee tell?

The three have one thing in common: loneliness.

As each life story unfolds, they become close friends. Aurelia tirelessly searches for Demetrios, the one who made her a vampire. An eternal outsider with a recently broken heart, Suze is looking to belong somewhere.

Renee has dreamed of being a vampire for as long as she can remember. Now with time running out, she decides to believe in her new friends and help Aurelia find Demetrios in the hope Aurelia will give her the gift of immortality before Renee’s time ends. When Lowe, a vampire slayer, befriends Renee, her feelings for him force her to question her allegiance. And if that weren’t enough, the ghost of a slain vampire starts appearing to her…
